Deoxyribonucleic acid – or DNA for short – is a simple molecule composed of atoms. It evokes so much in our imagination, yet deep down, we know so little about it.
DNA lies at the heart of the organization and reproduction of all living organisms and occupies a central place in the work of researchers. In 1944, its role in hereditary transmission was acknowledged. In 1953, the discovery of its double helix structure by Watson and Crick marked the history of twentieth century science. The key to understanding life had been unlocked, which resulted in the launch of many branches of science. In domains as diverse as evolutionary biology, genetics, microbiology and oncology, this tiny molecule continues to be the object of intense scientific scrutiny.
Over the last 15 years, genomic technology has made possible the most significant advances in knowledge of DNA, more specifically with the first sequencing of the human genome completed in 2003. The current and anticipated applications of genomics are many and various, and mark a new era in the history of biology. All this has revolutionized our understanding of life and the way we perceive it.
Since its creation in 2000, it has enabled Québec to secure a leading role in genomic research. Over the years, many areas of activity have benefited from research supported by Génome Québec.
